In fairness, we have encountered a total of three carpet cleaners in all the land who can actually perform  limited types of carpet dyeing usually with good results. We encourage competent competition, but to date - competion is still invisible or non-existent. We're willing to meet any challenge from individuals or companies anywhere. We welcome any comments or corrections to our "On-site Carpet Dyeing History". Once people are aware of this amazing service, the demand in every market is immediate and great.

The demand for on-site carpet dyeing is solely credited to property owners who needed a solution to the high cost and inconvenience of carpet replacement which occured far sooner than anticipated. This service industry was not created by any chemist or technoid, it actually birthed from consumer demand to receive the promised and expected value of this wonderful soft floor covering. However, the consumer wrongly assumed that the carpet cleaning industry would be the obvious providers of this service. So on-site carpet dyeing fell into the hands of the few brave carpet cleaners who also assumed that they could handle this complex art.

Needless to say it fell right out again, and again and again. Finally, a carpet cleaning franchisor (Guaranteed) began an attempt at actually teaching some on-site carpet dyeing methods to his existing carpet cleaner franchisees. So the real "pioneer" of on-site carpet dyeing was Guaranteed Carpet Cleaning & Dyeing of jacksonville, Florida. Although as a  franchise the system no longer exists, the credit for the roots of on-site carpet dyeing rightfully belong to Guaranteed.

All companies since Guaranteed, except Color Your Carpet®, have used the same methods, similar equipment and powder dyes to dye carpet. More importantly, only Color Your Carpet® is exclusively in the on-site carpet dyeing business. All the rest are carpet cleaners that have a very small portion of their franchisees who offer to perform carpet dyeing and then it is only a tiny fraction of their total business and revenue stream.

In contrast, 100% of our business is carpet dyeing. Further, we receive about 30% of our total carpet dyeing referrals from all top carpet cleaners in the markets in which we operate, including those listed below that claim to be able to dye on-site. Once "they" see what we can do, that they know they cannot do, they are glad to refer carpet dyeing jobs to us.

Finally, they know we won't steal their carpet cleaning customers because we are not carpet cleaners. They are carpet cleaners, we are carpet dyers. We refer carpet cleaning jobs to the best carpet cleaners in the area, and we ALWAYS know which ones are the best.

1979 Professional Carpet Systems (PCS) - founded in Georgia by Joe Lunsford. (Lunsford was a former Carpet Cleaning & Dyeing employee. His brother John has a chemical sales company "Harvard Chemicals" (Not "THE" Harvard of course!) PCS uses a spray method from an traditional carpet cleaning extractor with powder dyes)
1980 Rainbow Systems founded in Texas by Don Dwyer. (Dwyer was a former Guaranteed Carpet Cleaning & Dyeing employee. Uses rotary scrub method with powder dyes)
1981 Rainbow International offers carpet cleaning franchises with carpet dyeing as an add-on service. Dwyer's background was with SMI (Success Motivation Institute). He was quite an irresistible salesman. He bought or acquired numerous non-carpet -related businesses to sell to franchise prospects he had accumulated through the years. A few of those concepts are glass repair, plumbing & drain repair, appliance repair, air conditioning & heating, bathtub refinishing and accounting, But then as now, his Rainbow franchisees are primarily in the business of carpet cleaning, flood damage control and carpet repair - and do very little if any carpet dyeing to date. An interesting note is that Dwyer started Rainbow with more than a hundred franchisees whom he "rescued" or caused to "jump ship" from the Guaranteed Systems (depending on whose version of the story you hear).
1980 Langenwalter Systems founded in California by Roy Langenwalter.
1982 PCS begins to franchise offering carpet cleaning franchises with carpet dyeing as an add-on service.
1982 Guaranteed is sold to J. Smith.
1983 Langenwalter begins to franchise carpet cleaning with carpet dyeing as an add-on. Roy claims to be the "industry leader", a little late don't you think Roy?.
1986 Guaranteed files bankruptcy and dissolves.
1987 Color Your Carpet, Inc. acquires DyeTech.
1987 Color Your Carpet, Inc. launches prototype units in USA.
1988 Color Your Carpet, Inc. forms Color Your Carpet® Franchise Systems
1989 Color Your Carpet, Inc. appoints Ms. Connie B. D'Imperio as Managing Director.
1990 Ms. Connie B. D'Imperio acquires Color Your Carpet, Inc. and begins franchising.
1990 Color Your Carpet, Inc. appoints first franchise in USA.
1990 Color Your Carpet, Inc. acquires International Trademark and Copyrights in Canada.
1990 Color Your Carpet, Inc. appoints first franchise in Canada.
1993 Color Your Carpet, Inc. acquires first International Trademark and Copyrights in South America.
1993 Lunsford (PCS) exits franchising system after sale to foreign investors.

1994 Rainbow Systems founder, Don Dwyer, dies. A great loss to the world of franchising. His wife and daughter now run the Dwyer Group companies with two sons in management of two of the subsidiary companies.
1995 Color Your Carpet, Inc. acquires International Trademark and Copyrights in Colombia.
1995 Color Your Carpet, Inc. appoints first franchise in Colombia, South America.
1996 Color Your Carpet, Inc. acquires International Trademark and Copyrights in 23 countries.
1997 Color Your Carpet, Inc. opens first prototype in the U.K.
1997 PCS reacquired from foreign investors by Lunsford.
1999 PCS purchased by Fritz Thompson, relocated to NC.
2000 Langenwalter analysis reveals the system has 58 franchises (almost half in California) in the USA to date (franchising since 1983), and with 16 in Canada. So that's about 4 sales average per year. Note: Still predominantly carpet cleaners with less than 5% actually revenue from dyeing.
2000 Rainbow sales material says the system has more than 250 franchisees. That's about 12 sales per year! So far, analysis report shows less than that. The interesting part is that like the rest of the companies that claim to do dyeing, 95%+ of their franchisees don't do any dyeing jobs at all. And of the ones that do, dyeing is actually less than 10% of their revenue stream with rare exception. In fact, the company has removed the word "dyeing" from their name and now it is called "Rainbow Carpet Care".
2000 PCS sales material says the system has 75 franchises, franchising since 1982. Again about 4 per year. Analysis report coming soon.
